Place for Two Stones
September 6-October 31, 2007
Reception for the Artist: Friday, September 14, 5-7 pm
Jason McCoy Inc. is pleased to present "Place for Two Stones" an exhibition of recent works by Houston based painter Terrell James.
Terrell James' work, far from being overtly referential, is highly evocative and opens itself to interpretation. It is a personal code, a stream of thoughts let loose to gather on the blank page or canvas. However freely associative, James work is intimate in that her creative process remains highly personal. In the tradition of 20th Century abstract painting, James believes in the immediacy of gesture and the spontaneity of impulse as key expressive elements. However, landscape painting is also present here; past and present converge in that the memory of a place and how she interprets her experience become a fused entity. Shapes, colors, contours, sounds, and climate of the land become milestones for the artist's imagination and affect each step of the work. Adding her angle, she complements these qualities with a thorough investigation of the self and slumbering emotional content.
Born in 1955 in Houston, TX, James has exhibited extensively in the United States, South America and Asia. Her work is part of the permanent collections at the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX; the Menil
Collection, Houston, TX; the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; the Portland Art Museum, OR; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, amongst others.
This will be the second exhibition of James' work at the gallery. A catalogue will be published and available through the gallery with full-color reproductions.
