Jason McCoy Inc. is pleased to present "Listening Water," an exhibition of recent works by Boston based artist Catherine Kernan.
Catherine Kernan’s imagery is rooted in nature. Combining printmaking and painting through the means of abstraction, she develops a visual code that balances rhythm and texture, a sense of order and chaos, or as Kernan puts it, embodies “the control and serendipity of life itself.”
Though Catherine embraces the immediacy of gesture, her process evolves slowly. Using woodblocks in unorthodox ways as a transfer tool, she painstakingly builds each image layer by layer, responding to each stage in the process to determine the next move. Through this fluid and free-form approach, she succeeds in creating compositions that are dense in information. To her, peering through the layers, suggests an exploration of time, signifying the attempt to decipher the relative importance of events and memories.
Catherine Kernan was born in Cooperstown, New York in 1948. She attended Wellesley College, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Cooper Union in New York City, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin/Madison. Catherine Kernan has exhibited extensively in the United States, as well as internationally. Her work is part of many public collections, including the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Boston Public Library, Grunewald Collection, New York Public Library, Library of Congress, Detroit Institute of Art, Davison Art Center at Wesleyan University, and the Fogg Art Museum. Catherine Kernan currently lives and works in Somerville, Massachusetts, where she maintains a studio and print shop. During her childhood, Catherine lived extended periods of time in Iran, Korea and Spain. Her love of Ireland and Greece has brought her on numerous painting trips to Ballycastle, County Mayo and the Greek isle of Patmos.
