Kevin Larmon: Recent Paintings
December 9, 2008 January 24, 2009
Opening Reception: Tuesday, December 9, 5.30 7.30 pm
Jason McCoy Inc. is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Kevin Larmon.
For almost three decades, Larmon has received critical acclaim for creating paintings that lyrically explore the divide between abstraction and referential imagery. He aims to establish compositions that while largely remaining nonreferential and non-objective, nevertheless convey distinct moods and a strong sense of atmosphere. Along these lines, he combines expressive gestures with more specifically drawn details, and layers washes of paint with opaque forms. The results are compositions that often read as epic sceneries. Familiar or dazzlingly strange, these are highly associative and reminiscent of dramatic landscapes found in nature as well as of out-of-space skies.
Meanwhile, Larmon often experiments with his materials in order to create surfaces that are rich in visual and textural information and add a stark contrast to the fluid biomorphic forms he prefers. A sense of mystique prevails in Larmon’s work, which bestows a meditative calm. In Larmon, we are challenged to observe the vast scapes before us without the distractions of a clear sense of time or referential space.
Born in Syracuse, NY, in 1955, Larmon has exhibited extensively since the early 1980s. His work is in the collection of various museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Museum of
Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Larmon is the recipient of the 2004 Atlantic Pacific Fellowship bringing American Painters to live and work in Japan. This will be the third exhibition of Larmon's work at the gallery.
