Philip Smith (b. 1952) is an American artist whose work combines elements of photography, drawing, and painting. The base of his monochromatic canvases are covered with wax or gesso, in which drawings of glyph-like items and symbols are etched. His work is simplistic yet almost otherworldly.

Born in Miami, Florida, Philip Smith attended Clark University in 1976. He lived and practiced in New York City until 2018 before returning to Miami. He is the author of Walking Through Walls, where he discusses his father’s relationship with death and healing the ill. His work is featured in the Whitney Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Museum of Fine Art, Dallas, and Detroit Institute of Art, among others.
